Flat Rock Concrete Work

Flat Rock sits at the southern edge of our service area, about 23 miles southwest of downtown Detroit, with a small piece reaching across the Huron River into Monroe County. Homeowners who call concrete contractors in Flat Rock include owners of older houses near the river and families in newer homes built as the city grew. The city had 10,541 residents in 2020 and 4,212 housing units, up from 3,291 in 2000. We pour driveways, patios and stamped concrete, walks and steps, garage and shed slabs, and repair worn concrete.

A city named for rock

Wikipedia says Flat Rock takes its name from a limestone outcropping on the south side of the Huron River. A French priest, Jean Dilhet, called the area Grosse Roche in 1798. Michael Vreeland and his sons settled here between 1811 and 1820, and it was the Village of Vreeland until 1838, when the Gibraltar and Flat Rock Land Company platted it. In 1925 Henry Ford set up a lamp factory on the river, with the Flat Rock Dam built to power it. Flat Rock became a village in 1923 and a city in 1965.

Old and new on the same streets

Flat Rock has grown steadily, from 4,696 people in 1960 to 9,878 in 2010. That steady growth means a range of concrete ages. Near downtown and the river, we replace walks and steps on older homes, often with narrow drives. In the newer subdivisions, owners usually want a first patio, a stamped walkway or a wider driveway for an extra car.

New-construction lots have their own issue: the soil around the house was dug up and backfilled when it was built, and it keeps settling for years. A patio poured on that soil without proper compaction will sink at the house edge. We compact the base in layers and set the slab with a pitch away from the foundation.

River ground

The Huron River runs through Flat Rock and forms part of its southern edge. Lots closer to the river sit on lower ground, and soil there can stay wet into spring. That matters for concrete because water trapped under a slab expands when it freezes. On those properties we build a deeper aggregate base and pay close attention to where downspouts and yard water go.

Getting here

U.S. Route 24, Telegraph Road, runs through the middle of Flat Rock, and I-75 runs along its eastern border. We plan concrete delivery around Telegraph traffic.

Flat Rock Questions

Why is the patio on my newer Flat Rock home sinking?

Soil backfilled around a new house keeps settling. If the patio base was not compacted well, the slab drops at the house edge. A new patio on a compacted base, pitched away from the house, fixes it.

Do you work on the Monroe County side of Flat Rock?

Yes. We serve all of Flat Rock, including the small portion south of the Huron River.

Can you widen my driveway for another car?

Yes. We can add a side extension or replace the whole drive at a wider size, with a clean joint and matched finish.

Is Telegraph Road traffic a problem for delivery?

We plan the delivery window around Telegraph traffic so the concrete truck arrives when the crew and forms are ready.
