Concrete Repairs and Replacements in Inkster

Inkster is a compact city of about 6.25 square miles just north of Romulus and west of Dearborn Heights, and much of its housing has been standing for 60 years or more. People who search for concrete contractors in Inkster are usually dealing with a driveway that has broken up, a stoop that has separated from the house or a walk with trip edges. The 2020 census counted 26,088 residents and 11,485 housing units. We replace driveways and aprons, pour patios and stamped concrete, set walks and steps, build garage slabs and repair sunken or broken sections.

How Inkster got its name

A post office called Moulin Rouge opened here in December 1857 and was renamed Inkster in July 1863. Robert Inkster, a Scotsman, ran a steam sawmill on what is now Inkster Road near Michigan Avenue in the early 1860s, and a Michigan Central Railroad station stood here by 1878. In the 1920s and 1930s, Black workers at Henry Ford's Dearborn factories settled in Inkster, which was closer than Detroit and where they could buy homes. The village was incorporated in 1926 from parts of Nankin and Dearborn townships, and the city in 1964.

Houses from the boom years

The census shows Inkster growing from 16,728 residents in 1950 to 39,097 in 1960. A large share of the city's homes, and the concrete around them, went in during that decade. Original flatwork from the 1950s was often poured on a thin base and without the air-entrained mixes used for exterior work today. After six decades of freeze, thaw and salt, many of those driveways and walks have scaled, cracked into pieces or dropped.

We look at each job honestly. Sometimes the right answer is replacing two or three panels of a walk. Sometimes the base under a whole driveway has failed and patching will not hold. We explain what we see, show you where the problems are and give you a written estimate for the work that makes sense.

Stoops and front steps

Many Inkster homes have a poured concrete stoop at the front door. When the footing under a stoop moves, the steps tip, crack and pull away from the house, letting water run toward the foundation. Rebuilding the stoop on a proper base, with even risers and a slight slope away from the door, protects the house and makes the entry safer. We can pour a matching walk at the same time.

Flat ground and clay

Inkster sits at about 623 feet on the same flat, clay-heavy lakeplain found across southern Wayne County. Water does not drain quickly from soil like that. We dig out soft material, compact aggregate in layers, and set every slab with a pitch toward the street or yard.

Inkster Questions

Can you replace just part of my Inkster driveway?

If the base is sound and only some panels have failed, yes. If the whole slab is scaling or the base has given out, a full replacement lasts longer. We will tell you which applies.

My stoop is pulling away from the house. Is that serious?

It lets water run toward the foundation and can become a trip hazard. Rebuilding the stoop on a solid base fixes both problems.

Do you pour garage floors?

Yes. We replace detached and attached garage floors with a slope that sends water out the door.

How long until new concrete can handle a car?

Walking is fine much sooner than driving. We tell you the exact day you can park on it, based on the mix and the temperatures that week.
