Concrete Work on Grosse Ile

Grosse Ile Township is an island community, and that shapes how concrete jobs here are planned. The township includes twelve islands, and the main island is the largest in the Detroit River. About half of its 18.67 square miles is water. Homeowners who call concrete contractors in Grosse Ile often have larger lots, long driveways and outdoor spaces facing the river, and they want flatwork that looks good and lasts. The township had about 10,788 residents and 4,250 households in 2020. We pour driveways, patios and stamped concrete, walks and steps, garage slabs and repairs.

Island history

French explorers named it la grosse ile, the big island, in the late 1600s. The Potawatomi deeded the island to Alexander and William Macomb on July 6, 1776. Parts of the Rucker Homestead date to 1816, and St. James Episcopal Church, built in 1867, is the island's oldest church building. The township was organized in 1914 after splitting from Monguagon Township. The U.S. Naval Air Station opened here in 1929 and closed in November 1969, and its airfield is now Grosse Ile Municipal Airport. Between 1960 and 1980 the population roughly doubled, to about 9,300.

Getting concrete to the island

Grosse Ile is reached by two bridges: the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, opened November 27, 1913, and the Wayne County Bridge, known as the Free Bridge, converted from a rail bridge in 1931. Concrete is a timed material, so we plan the route, the bridge and the delivery window before pour day. We schedule larger pours early in the day and keep crews ready so the truck goes straight to placement.

Waterfront conditions

Riverfront and canal lots, including those along the Thorofare Canal that splits the main island, have high water tables and damp soil much of the year. Patios and walks near the shore need a solid aggregate base, careful compaction and a pitch that sends water away from the house. Stamped concrete is a popular choice for river-facing patios, and we finish it with a sealer to protect the color from weather and freeze-thaw cycles.

The island also takes its green space seriously. The township's Open Space Program began in the early 1990s, and the Grosse Ile Land and Nature Conservancy was founded in 1993. Many lots have mature trees, so we plan around roots and protect lawns during the work.

Grosse Ile Questions

Is it harder to get concrete delivered to Grosse Ile?

It takes more planning. We plan the bridge route and delivery window ahead of time so the concrete arrives on schedule.

Can you pour a stamped patio facing the river?

Yes. We build a solid compacted base for damp waterfront soil, pitch the patio away from the house and seal the finish.

Do you protect trees and lawns during the work?

Yes. We plan access and forming to protect mature trees and lawns, and we clean up when the job is done.

Can you pour a circular driveway?

Yes. Larger island lots often have room for one. We lay out the curve with you, set the grade to drain and pour it in sections with planned joints.
